Early Identification and Intervention Keys to Treating Autism
Autism occurs in approximately one in every 150 children. The number of diagnosed cases has increased dramatically in the past decade. Although there is no cure, early diagnosis and treatment have a significant impact on future progress.
“Studies consistently show that children who start treatment at the earliest possible age are less likely to require intensive and restrictive services later,” explains Susan M. Wilczynski, Ph.D., BCBA, Executive Director of the National Autism Center. “It’s important for parents, pediatricians, preschool teachers, and other caretakers to understand the symptoms of developmental disabilities and to move quickly on diagnosis and treatment.”

May Institute, MBTA Team up to Promote Autism Awareness
Boston, Mass. — Throughout the month of April, MBTA subway, bus, and commuter rail passengers can learn more about autism spectrum disorders (ASD) thanks to a powerful new public awareness campaign unveiled by May Institute and the MBTA today at South Station in Boston. Headquartered in Randolph, Mass., May Institute is a national nonprofit organization that serves individuals with autism and other special needs.

National Autism Center Acknowledges UK Efforts to Establish a National Clinical Guideline for Autism
The National Autism Center today recognized the efforts of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), which recently published a national clinical guideline entitled “Assessment, Diagnosis, and Clinical Interventions for Children and Young People with Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

Faces and Voices of Autism Photo Exhibition to Debut at the State House
Boston, Mass. — Faces and Voices of Autism, a unique exhibition that combines photographs of children and adolescents with autism with personal stories told by people in their lives, will debut at the Massachusetts State House on April 30, to coincide with Autism Spectrum Awareness Day.
The free exhibition is presented by May Institute, a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with special needs, and the National Autism Center, in collaboration with Andrew Child Photography. The State House will host the exhibit during the week of April 30. Other venues will include the Prudential Center (May 12-18) and Children’s Hospital, Boston in June.
